Rhodonite meaning
A manganese inosilicate. (Mn, Fe, Mg, Ca)SiO3. It is a member of the pyroxenoid group of minerals. Rhodonite gem crystallizes in the triclinic system. It also commonly occurs as cleavable to compact masses with a rose-red color. The name comes from the Greek rhodos. Rosy, often tending to brown because of surface oxidation.
Rhodonite crystals often have a thick tabular habit but are rare. It has a perfect, prismatic cleavage, almost at right angles. The hardness is 5.5 to 6.5. The specific gravity is 3.4–3.7. Also the luster is vitreous, being less frequently pearly on cleavage surfaces.
The manganese is often partly replaced by iron, also magnesium, calcium, and sometimes zinc. It may sometimes be present in considerable amounts. A greyish-brown variety containing as much as 20% of calcium oxide. It is called bustamite. Fowlerite is a zinciferous variety containing 7% of zinc oxide.
Inosilicate
The inosilicate, chain silicate, structure of red rhodonite rock has a repeat unit of five silica tetrahedra. The rare polymorph pyroxmangite is formed at different conditions of pressure and temperature. It has the same chemical composition. But a repeat unit of seven tetrahedra.
The stone is also an ornamental stone. In the iron and also manganese mines. The location is Pajsberg near Filipstad. And also Långban in Värmland, Sweden. Small brilliant and translucent crystals, pajsbergite, and also cleavage masses occur.
Fowlerite occurs as large, rough crystals. Somewhat it looks like pink feldspar. It s franklinite and also zinc ores, in granular limestone. We found it at Franklin Furnace in New Jersey, USA.
Pyroxenoid
Silicate minerals are rock-forming minerals with predominantly silicate anions. They are the largest and most important class of rock-forming minerals. It make up approximately 90 percent of the Earth’s crust.
In mineralogy, silica, or silicon dioxide SiO2, which corresponds to x=2 in the general formula. It is usually considered a silicate mineral. Even though its silicate anion has no negative charge and it has no cations. We found silica in nature as the mineral quartz, and its polymorphs.
