Our gemology courses take place at our facility, Gemic Institute, located at
Rose Apple Square, Rose Apple Road, Siem Reap, Cambodia.
What is Gemology?
Gemology is the science of gem materials and a specialized branch of mineralogy. Studying gemology covers all the technical aspects of gemstones and gem materials, including their chemical, physical, and optical properties, the techniques used for producing gem imitations and synthetics, and the cutting and polishing of gemstones. More importantly, gemology courses teach the methods and instruments used for identifying, grading, and appraising gemstones.
The term 'gem material' encompasses a wide range of possibilities. Most gem materials are minerals, but of the approximately 3,000 minerals known to humanity, only about 70 families (500 stones) are considered to have the qualities that classify them as gemstones.

What to Expect from the Beginner Gemology Course?
- How to avoid falling into the trap of fake gemstone sellers?
- How to recognize natural gemstones, synthetics, and treatments?
- How to evaluate the quality and determine the pricing of gemstones?
All your questions will be answered during this course. By the end of the course, you will have a deeper understanding of where gemstones come from and how to accurately identify their unique characteristics.

We took the 1-hour lesson, which ended up to be a bit longer due to the great amount of knowledge that was being shared by Jean. Jean was great at not just explaining the different types of stones, but was also great at bringing it to life in the Cambodian context as well as with very cool stories. Also very great demonstrations in the lab where you actually get to see different types of gems and try to figure out which one is real, treated or synthetic! There is also a great selection of local Cambodian gems to purchase at very reasonable prices after the lesson.
