Watermelon tourmaline is a variety of concentrically color-zoned tourmaline with red interiors and green exteriors and is distinct from longitudinal bi-color or polychrome zonation.

According to the Madras Tamil Lexicon, the name comes from the Sinhalese word “thoramalli”, a group of gemstones found in Sri Lanka. Watermelon tourmaline or elbaite also, is a sodium, lithium, aluminum boro-silicate, with the chemical composition Na(Li1.5Al1.5)Al6Si6O18(BO3)3(OH)4. It is a mineral species belonging to the six-member ring cyclosilicate tourmaline group.

Some exhibiting multicolor zonation. Finally, microscopic acicular inclusions in some crystals show a sat’s eye effect in polished cabochons.
