Known as common mica, isinglass, or potash mica is a hydrated phyllosilicate mineral of aluminum and potassium. It has a highly perfect basal cleavage yielding remarkably thin in thin section laminae which are often highly elastic.

Properties

The stone has a Mohs hardness of 2–2.25 parallel to the face, 4 perpendicular to the and a specific gravity of 2.76–3. It can be colorless or tinted through grays, browns, greens, yellows, or rarely violet or red, and can be transparent or translucent. It is anisotropic and has high birefringence. Its crystal system is monoclinic. The green, chromium-rich variety is called fuchsite; mariposite is also a chromium-rich type of muscovite.

Mica

Muscovite is the most common mica, found in granites, pegmatites, gneisses, and schists, and as a contact metamorphic rock or as a secondary mineral resulting from the alteration of topaz, feldspar, kyanite, etc. In pegmatites, it is often found in immense sheets that are commercially valuable. The sstone is in demand for the manufacture of fireproofing and insulating materials and to some extent as a lubricant.

Origin

The name muscovite comes from Muscovy-glass, a name given to the mineral in Elizabethan England due to its use in medieval Russia as a cheaper alternative to glass in windows. This usage became widely known in England during the sixteenth century with its first mention appearing in letters by George Turberville, the secretary of England’s ambassador to the tsar Ivan the Terrible, in 1568.

FAQ

What is muscovite used for?

The stone is pearlescent, which means it can add additional shine to certain paints, ceramic glazes and even cosmetics. Scrap, flaked and ground stone is also commonly used as fillers and extenders in products like paints, surface treatments and manufactured products.

What mineral is muscovite mica?

A common rock-forming mineral found in felsic igneous rocks, pegmatites and metamorphic rocks, It is the lightest-colored member of the mica mineral group. Micas are a group of sheet silicate minerals distinguished by their perfect single cleavage.

What type of rock is muscovite?

The stone typically occurs in metamorphic rocks, particularly gneisses and schists, where it forms crystals and plates. It also occurs in granites, in fine-grained sediments, and in some highly siliceous rocks. Large crystals of gemstones are often found in veins and pegmatites.

What is the difference between muscovite and biotite?

The stone contains mainly potassium and aluminum, while biotite mainly contains potassium and magnesium. They are phyllosilicate minerals.

Can muscovite scratch glass?

It has a Mohs hardness of 2 to 2.25. If the specimen is scratched, it is softer than the tool used to scratch it. If not, it is harder. A fingernail has hardness about 2.5, a copper penny 3, a steel knife blade about 5.5, glass between 6 and 7, depending on quality.

How is muscovite mineral formed?

The stone can form during the regional metamorphism of argillaceous rocks. The heat and pressure of metamorphism transforms clay minerals into tiny grains of mica which enlarge as metamorphism progresses.
