Natural blue zircon
There is little gemstone varieties of blue color which combine both hardness and gloss. Sapphire is the most famous. The blue topaz, produced by irradiating colorless topaz, is the most popular of all blue gemstones, because it is widely available at attractive prices and is found in light tones, medium and dark. Other choices of gemstones, including tanzanite (blue-violet) and aquamarine (light blue). Tourmaline and spinel can be found in blue sometimes, but rarely.
zircon is the gemstone of the brightest blue color, its refractive index is even higher than that of sapphire, tanzanite and spinel. But zircon is poorly understood by the general public, which is likely to be confused with cubic zirconia, a synthetic simulated diamond. Zircon is a natural mineral, zirconium silicate, is found in all colors of the rainbow, including colorless.
Blue zircon, the most popular color is produced by heat treatment of brown zircon. But all brown zircons not become blue when heated, and only a few zircons with the right physical structure turn blue when heated. This is why most blue zircon comes from Cambodia.
The name zircon is of uncertain origin. It may have come to us from the Arabic «zarkun» meaning vermillon, or from the Persian «zargun», meaning gold colored
In the Middle Ages, zircons were believed to induce sleep, as well as promote honor and wisdom. Zircon was believed to bring prosperity to its owner, moreover, zircon was thought to drive away plagues and evil spirits.
