Maw-sit-sit, from Myanmar

Also known as jade-albite, is a gemstone found exclusively in northern Burma. It was first identified in 1963 by the late Swiss gemologist, Edward Gubelin, and was named after the village close to where it was first found in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Typically maw sit sit is green with distinctive dark-green to black veins. Maw sit sit is technically a rock rather than a mineral. It is composed of several different minerals, including kosmochlor (also known as ureyite), varying amounts of chromium-enriched jadeite, and albite feldspar.

Maw sit sit can have a refractive index ranging from 1.52-1.68, and a hardness rating of 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale. Maw sit sit has a specific gravity ranging from 2.45 to 3.15. Clarity found within maw-sit-sit is typically translucent to opaque.

Coming from the Mandalay region, it is quite rare and very difficult to supply. The name Maw Sit Sit was given to this metamorphic aggregate by the natives living near the deposits for millennia near Kansi and Namshawa in northern Burma. The Latin name of the Maw Sit Sit is Kosmochlor Jade, so it is often confused with the Nephrite Jade very common also in these areas of Burma.

Maw Sit Sit was first identified by the Swiss gemologist Eduard Gubelin in 1963 in a city of the same name in Burma. This mineral is found where Imperial Jadeite is mined. It is found in the Tawmaw jade mining area in the foothills or at the foot of the Himalayan mountains in the north west of Burma.

This mineral is opaque to transparent with veins green or black, veins of emerald green or intense green neon exist.

The different constituents that can be included in the composition are: Chromite, Kosmochlor (which gives its typical black mottled), Jadeite, Sylektite, Chromium-amphibole, Arfvedsonite … all these mineral compounds that form this mosaic Blacks and greens from the maw sit sit make it a unique stone.
